20 Dec ‘God’s great miracle:’ Boy receives life-saving transplant from little girl who passed away
Lucas Goeller is living proof that prayer is powerful and one act of kindness can change the course of someone’s life.
When he was three months old, doctors diagnosed him with biliary atresia, a rare liver disease that infants can develop 2-8 weeks after they’re born.
His health was quickly deteriorating and Lucas desperately needed a liver transplant. By the time he was 1 and a half year old, doctors gave him a year to live.
Lucas’ mom Jessica knew she had to do something quick or her son was going to die.
She started a Facebook page called Save Lucas to create a awareness about his condition and to ultimately find a donor Lucas.
“From the very beginning, I knew God was using me,” Jessica told Hope Dealer. “We were a private family and putting our lives on Facebook was never something I wanted.”
The page quickly gained thousands of followers from all over the world. People were praying for Lucas and believing with Jessica that she’d find a donor.
“I never thought in my entire life that I would have been so calm when my son only had days to live,” Jessica said.
A woman from South Carolina named Tina was praying for a little girl in Nebraska named Olivia Swedberg who was terminally ill. She came across the Save Lucas Facebook page. Tina connected the two families.
Olivia’s mom Lauressa was touched by Lucas’ story.
“I felt that God had chosen Tina to contact me to tell me of Lucas,” Lauressa told Hope Dealer. “I don’t feel that I chose Lucas. He was destined to cross our path.”
When Olivia passed away, the Swedbergs donated her liver to Lucas. It saved his life.
“I was filled with grief and sadness that this family I never met was losing their daughter, Jessica said. “I prayed for a miracle for their daughter that she could survive.”
Even in the midst of pain and grief after Olivia passed away, the Swedberg family chose to see hope in the situation.
“It is truly an honor to watch this guy have a fighting chance at life,” she said. “Because of my princess, he got to celebrate his 3rd birthday.”
It’s been more than a year since the transplant and Lucas is doing great. Jessica says after the transplant, they were introduced to a little person they never met before.
“We saw a happiness and joy in his eyes and a vibrance about life.”
He gets excited about doing the little things in life and even helps out with the cleaning!
Throughout this journey from battling the illness until Lucas recovered from the transplant, the Goeller family stood on their faith that all was going to work out.
“[It was a] highly complicated process only made possible through God’s great miracle.”
